Comment est n\u00e9e l&rsquo;id\u00e9e de ce film ?<br \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>Je suis n\u00e9 et j\u2019ai grandi \u00e0 Villerupt, la petite ville de Lorraine o\u00f9 se d\u00e9roule le film. Il y a l\u00e0 une histoire que j\u2019ai trouv\u00e9e passionnante \u00e0 raconter. Une histoire tr\u00e8s repr\u00e9sentative de notre \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>2. Il s&rsquo;agit essentiellement de deux histoires et deux genres qui se confondent. C&rsquo;est ce que nous sugg\u00e8re \u00e9galement la prairie au d\u00e9but, avec ses traces qui s&rsquo;entrem\u00ealent, comme pour nous annoncer que nous allons voir deux histoires qui s&rsquo;entrem\u00ealent \u00e0 travers de nombreux personnages diff\u00e9rents. \u00cates-vous d&rsquo;accord ?<br \/><\/em><\/strong><br \/>Oui, exactement. Les deux histoires sont le pass\u00e9 et le pr\u00e9sent qui s\u2019entrem\u00ealent devant nous. En surface, ce sont des champs, des routes, un paysage aujourd\u2019hui ; et sous terre, en profondeur, les galeries de mines qui ont fait la richesse industrielle de cette r\u00e9gion pendant un si\u00e8cle. De ce pass\u00e9 enfoui, on ne voit plus rien, mais certains s\u2019en souviennent&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>3. Au d\u00e9but, cela ressemble presque \u00e0 un conte de f\u00e9es, avec des images fixes et une voix off qui raconte l&rsquo;histoire. Et avec l&rsquo;ajout de la musique, cela ressemble vraiment \u00e0 un conte. \u00c9tait-ce votre intention ?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong>La rencontre des deux \u00e9poques est guid\u00e9e par une voix off, la mienne, qui introduit l\u2019histoire. Mon p\u00e8re \u00e9tait directeur de la mine et je reviens ici, cinquante ans plus tard. Ce n\u2019est pas un reportage mais une enqu\u00eate m\u00e9morielle, un \u201cretour au pays de mon enfance\u201d. On peut parler de conte, je suis d\u2019accord avec vous. J\u2019ai essay\u00e9 de faire un film plus po\u00e9tique que r\u00e9aliste.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>4. C&rsquo;est comme si les images parlaient, dans le sens o\u00f9 nous voyons souvent des lieux inhabit\u00e9s ou des objets utilis\u00e9s dans le pass\u00e9, entour\u00e9s de silence. Presque comme si le fait de les observer leur permettait d&rsquo;\u00eatre des personnages \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. Est-il juste de dire que vous recherchiez une implication de tout l&rsquo;environnement afin que pas seulement les personnes, mais aussi les objets racontent une histoire ?<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong>Avec le temps, les hommes disparaissent, la m\u00e9moire faiblit, bient\u00f4t il n\u2019y a plus de t\u00e9moins du pass\u00e9, ni de personnages pour en parler. Mais il reste des lieux, des objets qui \u00e9voquent un monde disparu. Il suffit de les regarder, les filmer en silence, leur donner du temps dans la longueur d\u2019un plan. Ce sont des traces qui racontent une histoire. Cette mani\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9voquer le pass\u00e9, je l\u2019ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 souvent utilis\u00e9e dans mes autres films. Dans celui-ci, j\u2019ai voulu ajouter une autre mani\u00e8re de faire\u00a0: gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la musique.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>5. Pourquoi avez-vous d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d&rsquo;ajouter la partie musicale? Pensez-vous que cela puisse \u00eatre un moyen d&rsquo;attirer davantage le public qui se sent plus impliqu\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>?<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong>Dans ce film, je parle du pr\u00e9sent en le filmant devant nous. Je parcours la petite ville de Villerupt aujourd\u2019hui, et ses habitants s\u2019entretiennent avec moi. Mais pour parler du pass\u00e9, je fais le choix de le repr\u00e9senter musicalement\u00a0: sous la forme d\u2019un op\u00e9ra. Je filme la vie d\u2019une famille de mineurs \u00e0 Villerupt dans les ann\u00e9es 1950, un couple et ses deux enfants,\u00a0et leurs r\u00f4les sont chant\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ai imagin\u00e9 les sc\u00e8nes de cet op\u00e9ra avec Cristina Comencini et nous avons propos\u00e9 au po\u00e8te Valerio Magrelli d\u2019\u00e9crire les paroles chant\u00e9es. Ensuite une musique originale a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crite par le compositeur Carlo Crivelli.<\/p>\n<p>Les quatre personnages sont italiens et ils chantent en italien, parce que, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, Villerupt \u00e9tait surtout peupl\u00e9e d\u2019Italiens qui avaient \u00e9migr\u00e9 dans toute la r\u00e9gion, depuis le d\u00e9but XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, pour travailler dans les mines.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>6. Il est \u00e9galement int\u00e9ressant de m\u00e9langer plusieurs aspects: la partie musicale et la partie non musicale, le pr\u00e9sent et le pass\u00e9, l&rsquo;Italie et la France. Peut-on d\u00e9finir ce film comme un film de contrastes ?<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong>Oui c\u2019est un film de contrastes, mais aussi de continuit\u00e9. On d\u00e9couvre deux \u00e9poques tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes\u00a0: en 1950, c\u2019est un monde mat\u00e9riel, le travail manuel dans les\u00a0mines, la vie collective dans les cit\u00e9s que nous chante une famille ouvri\u00e8re ; et aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est un monde d\u00e9mat\u00e9rialis\u00e9, virtuel,\u00a0o\u00f9 les jeunes gens sont employ\u00e9s dans l\u2019informatique et l\u2019intelligence artificielle. Pourtant, \u00e0 Villerupt, ces deux mondes contrast\u00e9s sont en continuit\u00e9\u00a0: les immigr\u00e9s italiens sont rest\u00e9s vivre ici, les descendants des mineurs sont aujourd\u2019hui des informaticiens, des banquiers, des sp\u00e9cialistes de l\u2019IA. Une continuit\u00e9 familiale existe, mais le monde a totalement chang\u00e9. Les \u201cTemps nouveaux\u201d (le titre du film) sont des temps anciens qui se sont transport\u00e9s de p\u00e8re en fils jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nous.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>7. Est-il juste de dire que le film est une r\u00e9flexion sur les cons\u00e9quences des actes? Dans le sens o\u00f9 tout ce qui s&rsquo;est pass\u00e9 dans le pass\u00e9 a \u00e9videmment des r\u00e9percussions sur le pr\u00e9sent, en particulier dans les paroles et la vie des successeurs et des descendants. La m\u00e9moire devient fondamentale et elle est en quelque sorte repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par la partie musicale, qui semble \u00eatre la plus int\u00e9ressante et la plus importante, mais qui se perd ensuite dans le chaos du pr\u00e9sent.<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong>Effectivement la m\u00e9moire est importante dans ce film. Elle est incarn\u00e9e par ces chanteurs qui font revivre devant nous l\u2019\u00e9poque des ann\u00e9es 1950\u00a0: c\u2019est un retour du pass\u00e9, un <em>revival<\/em> presque magique (je pense au \u201cconte\u201d que vous \u00e9voquiez plus haut). Mais je ne sais pas si ce pass\u00e9 a eu de r\u00e9elles r\u00e9percussions sur les jeunes gens d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. Les descendants des mineurs, interrog\u00e9s dans le film, se sentent encore un peu italiens, ils savent que leurs familles sont arriv\u00e9es autrefois d\u2019Ombrie ou de V\u00e9n\u00e9tie, ils ont entendu parler du travail \u00e0 la mine, mais pour le reste&#8230; ce monde pass\u00e9 leur semble tr\u00e8s lointain\u00a0! C\u2019\u00e9tait l\u00e0, pour moi, l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat d\u2019un tel film\u00a0: monter en parall\u00e8le deux mondes tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents dont l\u2019un provient pourtant de l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>8. Comment s&rsquo;est pass\u00e9e la collaboration avec Cristina Comencini pour le sc\u00e9nario ?<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong>Tr\u00e8s bien. J\u2019\u00e9tais content de travailler avec elle sur ce film. Avant d\u2019\u00eatre la cin\u00e9aste que l\u2019on conna\u00eet, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 (et reste) une excellente sc\u00e9nariste. Dans les ann\u00e9es 1960, elle devint une nouvelle patrie pour de nombreux mineurs italiens \u2014 travailleurs infatigables et passionn\u00e9s d\u2019op\u00e9ra.<\/p>\n<p>Caillat y retourne, filmant les maisons de son enfance, rest\u00e9es presque inchang\u00e9es, avant de rencontrer les descendants de ces mineurs. Ces petits-enfants, d\u00e9sormais actifs au Luxembourg dans la finance ou les technologies, incarnent une autre forme de travail et de modernit\u00e9.<br \/>\u00ab Dans mes films, je me demande toujours comment repr\u00e9senter le pass\u00e9 \u00bb, confie Caillat. Avec Comencini, il \u00e9voque ici le processus artistique et la fronti\u00e8re poreuse entre documentaire et fiction.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Une rencontre entre l\u2019op\u00e9ra et le r\u00e9el<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Temps nouveaux<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>na\u00eet d\u2019un m\u00e9lange rare : d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, la musique d\u2019un op\u00e9ra sur le monde ouvrier, compos\u00e9 par Carlo Crivelli sur un livret de Valerio Magrelli ; de l\u2019autre, un documentaire tourn\u00e9 \u00e0 Villerupt.<br \/>Un mariage inhabituel entre la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et la musique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Caillat :<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab C\u2019est vrai, c\u2019est rare, et c\u2019est justement pour \u00e7a que j\u2019ai eu envie de le faire. J\u2019ai tourn\u00e9 beaucoup de documentaires, mais j\u2019aime exp\u00e9rimenter de nouvelles formes. Et comme il est difficile de trouver des financements, il faut avoir une forte motivation. Pour moi, la nouveaut\u00e9, c\u2019est une forme d\u2019\u00e9nergie. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mais au d\u00e9part, le projet a suscit\u00e9 des doutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Tout le monde me disait que \u00e7a ne marcherait pas, que \u00e7a n\u2019avait jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 fait. Et parce que cela n\u2019avait jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 fait, on en concluait que ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas possible ! Je ne savais pas si \u00e7a allait fonctionner, mais j\u2019ai essay\u00e9. Et finalement, le r\u00e9sultat m\u2019a surpris. Au cin\u00e9ma, il faut oser, sinon on refait toujours la m\u00eame chose. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Cette audace, dit-il, s\u2019accompagne d\u2019une part d\u2019inconscience :<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Faire un film, c\u2019est accepter de ne pas savoir. C\u2019est comme un peintre qui commence une toile sans mod\u00e8le : on avance dans l\u2019incertitude. C\u2019est \u00e7a, l\u2019excitation de la cr\u00e9ation. \u00bb<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Une mise en sc\u00e8ne du pass\u00e9<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Caillat n\u2019avait jamais film\u00e9 l\u2019op\u00e9ra auparavant.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab C\u2019\u00e9tait un vrai<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>work in progress<\/em>. Il n\u2019y avait pas de sc\u00e9nario fig\u00e9, mais beaucoup d\u2019\u00e9nergie et de curiosit\u00e9. C\u2019est pour \u00e7a que j\u2019aime le documentaire : on ne sait jamais ce qui va arriver. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Pour lui,<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Temps nouveaux<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>pose la question centrale de son \u0153uvre : comment repr\u00e9senter le pass\u00e9 ?<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les approches classiques \u2014 archives, entretiens, historiens \u2014 ne me suffisent plus. J\u2019ai voulu mettre en sc\u00e8ne le pass\u00e9, non pas comme dans une fiction, mais comme une reconstitution volontaire au sein du documentaire. Dans le film, les grands-parents chantent pendant que les enfants parlent. Autrefois, la famille chantait ; aujourd\u2019hui, elle se souvient. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Et derri\u00e8re cette r\u00e9flexion, une id\u00e9e politique :<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab La m\u00e9moire ouvri\u00e8re est indissociable de la m\u00e9moire musicale. L\u2019op\u00e9ra a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 la culture italienne au XIX\u1d49 si\u00e8cle. M\u00eame dans les milieux modestes, il y avait une immense sensibilit\u00e9 musicale. \u00bb<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Les lieux de la m\u00e9moire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Caillat :<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab Les lieux ont conserv\u00e9 une beaut\u00e9 intacte. Les maisons des mineurs sont toujours l\u00e0. \u00bb<br \/><strong>Cristina Comencini :<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab C\u2019est de l\u00e0 qu\u2019est n\u00e9e l\u2019id\u00e9e. Fran\u00e7ois est retourn\u00e9 dans ce quartier ouvrier : les maisons \u00e9taient les m\u00eames, mais devant, il y avait des BMW et des Mercedes. Le matin, les habitants partaient au Luxembourg pour travailler dans les banques, puis revenaient le soir. On s\u2019est dit que, dans cette ville silencieuse, les anciens ouvriers pouvaient revenir chanter. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Les images nocturnes des voitures, symboles d\u2019une nouvelle civilisation, sont n\u00e9es spontan\u00e9ment lors du tournage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comencini :<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab Ce que j\u2019aime dans le travail de Fran\u00e7ois, c\u2019est cette recherche constante \u00e0 travers le cin\u00e9ma. Nous nous sommes rencontr\u00e9s au festival de Villerupt, un grand rendez-vous du cin\u00e9ma italien. L\u00e0-bas, les immigr\u00e9s italiens continuaient de r\u00e9clamer les films d\u2019Alberto Sordi.<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Temps nouveaux<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>relie nos deux pays \u2014 la France et l\u2019Italie \u2014 et rend hommage \u00e0 ces ouvriers qui chantaient\u2026 mais qui, souvent, mouraient aussi. \u00bb<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Un film personnel et sensible<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Caillat :<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab Le film a \u00e9t\u00e9 tourn\u00e9 dans la maison o\u00f9 je suis n\u00e9 et o\u00f9 j\u2019ai grandi pendant dix ans. C\u2019est donc aussi une recherche sur mon enfance. L\u2019\u00e9motion est tr\u00e8s forte. Si une influence existe, c\u2019est celle de mes souvenirs. J\u2019ai voulu faire un film sensible, pas d\u00e9monstratif ni sociologique. C\u2019est un film sur ma propre histoire. \u00bb<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Entre fiction et r\u00e9alit\u00e9<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cristina Comencini :<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab Je viens de la fiction, Fran\u00e7ois du documentaire. C\u2019\u00e9tait notre premi\u00e8re collaboration de ce genre. Ce qui m\u2019a plu, c\u2019est que malgr\u00e9 le cadre documentaire, il y avait une vraie histoire \u00e0 raconter. Aujourd\u2019hui, beaucoup de films de fiction s\u2019inspirent du documentaire. Ici, c\u2019est l\u2019inverse : le r\u00e9el emprunte au cin\u00e9ma de fiction. Ma rimangono i luoghi, gli oggetti che evocano un mondo scomparso. Basta guardarli, filmarli in silenzio, dedicare loro tempo in un lungo piano sequenza. Sono tracce che raccontano una storia. Ho gi\u00e0 utilizzato spesso questo modo di evocare il passato nei miei altri film. Si scoprono due epoche molto diverse: il 1950 \u00e8 un mondo materiale, il lavoro manuale nelle miniere, la vita collettiva nei quartieri popolari che ci racconta una famiglia di operai; oggi \u00e8 un mondo smaterializzato, virtuale, dove i giovani lavorano nell\u2019informatica e nell\u2019intelligenza artificiale. Tuttavia, a Villerupt, questi due mondi contrastanti sono in continuit\u00e0: gli immigrati italiani sono rimasti a vivere qui, i discendenti dei minatori sono oggi informatici, banchieri, specialisti di IA. Esiste una continuit\u00e0 familiare, ma il mondo \u00e8 completamente cambiato. La memoria diventa fondamentale e in qualche modo \u00e8 rappresentata dalla parte musicale, sembra essere la pi\u00f9 interessante e importante, ma poi si perde nel caos del presente.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 1.1rem; vertical-align: baseline; color: #000000; display: block; font-family: 'PT Serif', sans-serif; font-weight: 400; line-height: 1.55;\">Effettivamente la memoria \u00e8 importante in questo film. \u00c8 incarnata da questi cantanti che fanno rivivere davanti ai nostri occhi l\u2019epoca degli anni \u201950: \u00e8 un ritorno al passato, un revival quasi magico (penso alla \u201cfiaba\u201d di cui parlavi prima). Ma non so se questo passato abbia avuto ripercussioni reali sui giovani di oggi. I discendenti dei minatori, intervistati nel film, si sentono ancora un po\u2019 italiani, sanno che le loro famiglie sono arrivate un tempo dall\u2019Umbria o dal Veneto, hanno sentito parlare del lavoro in miniera, ma per il resto\u2026 quel mondo passato sembra loro molto lontano!
