Les prisonniers, en participant \u00e0 cette \u0153uvre grandiose, acc\u00e9daient au panth\u00e9on des h\u00e9ros de l\u2019URSS.<br \/>\nOn estime que vingt mille d\u2019entre eux p\u00e9rirent \u00e0 la t\u00e2che.<\/p>\n<p>Le Belomorkanal incarne \u00e0 la fois la noirceur des camps staliniens et les vertus r\u00e9demptrices du travail, mis au service de la grande cause. Il porte en lui les contradictions de la plus grande utopie politique du 20\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nUn film musical.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La voix des morts est un film-essai d\u2019une trentaine de minutes, o\u00f9 l\u2019image et la musique tiennent une part \u00e9gale.<br \/>\nOn peut parler d\u2019un \u201cfilm musical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019image est faite de plans de nature tourn\u00e9s en Car\u00e9lie russe (lacs, for\u00eats de bouleaux), retravaill\u00e9s dans leur forme et leur texture.<br \/>\nElle int\u00e8gre progressivement des fragments d\u2019archives polici\u00e8res sovi\u00e9tiques (Guepeou) des ann\u00e9es 1930, consacr\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019avanc\u00e9e du chantier.<\/p>\n<p>La musique, con\u00e7ue d\u2019un seul tenant et sur la m\u00eame dur\u00e9e, forme un po\u00e8me sonore qui r\u00e9pond \u00e0 l\u2019image, sans effet de redondance ni d\u2019illustration.<\/p>\n<p>Ensemble, image et musique font revivre devant nous l\u2019\u00e9pop\u00e9e tragique de la construction du Belomorkanal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nUne musique originale.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La musique a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crite pour le film par Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Boulard, compositeur dont plusieurs \u0153uvres pass\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 jou\u00e9es par des orchestres de classe internationale et font l\u2019objet d\u2019\u00e9ditions r\u00e9put\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Cette musique, compos\u00e9e pour une trentaine de musiciens, est interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e par les instrumentistes de l\u2019Orchestre de Douai, auxquels s\u2019adjoint un Ch\u0153ur.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nUne cr\u00e9ation visuelle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le m\u00e9lange progressif d\u2019images de nature et d\u2019archives, et leur superposition dynamique dans la partie m\u00e9diane du film, a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u avec le concours de David Rodes, jeune artiste sorti de l\u2019<em>Ecole du Fresnoy &#8211; fut r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1931-33 sur d\u00e9cision du pouvoir sovi\u00e9tique pour d\u00e9senclaver la Mer Blanche en la reliant \u00e0 la Mer Baltique. Long de 227 kms, il r\u00e9pondait \u00e0 des pr\u00e9occupations strat\u00e9giques autant que commerciales en ouvrant un passage \u00e0 la flotte du Grand Nord. Sa construction mobilisa de dizaines de milliers de travailleurs forc\u00e9s\u00a0: droits communs, paysans d\u00e9koulakis\u00e9s, et surtout opposants politiques sur lesquels la r\u00e9pression avait commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 s\u2019abattre d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1920.<br \/>\nLa mise en \u0153uvre du chantier fut grandiose. Le projet exigeait de vaincre d\u2019\u00e9normes d\u00e9nivellations de terrain, de brasser des millions de m\u00e8tres cubes, de construire des dizaines de digues, de retenues et d\u2019\u00e9cluses. Le travail fut r\u00e9alis\u00e9 avec des mat\u00e9riaux le plus souvent en bois et selon des techniques rudimentaires. \u2028Staline avait exig\u00e9 que l\u2019ouvrage soit achev\u00e9 vite et \u00e0 bas prix. Il fut ob\u00e9i, mais le prix s\u2019av\u00e9ra tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9 en hommes : on estime que, sur les 125.000 prisonniers employ\u00e9s au chantier, 25.000\u00a0y laiss\u00e8rent la vie.<\/p>\n<p>La Car\u00e9lie du Belomorkanal repr\u00e9sente, avec la Sib\u00e9rie, la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9gion du Goulag sovi\u00e9tique, avec ses populations de d\u00e9tenus, ses camps, son organisation minutieuse g\u00e9r\u00e9e par la police politique, la Guepeou \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, pourtant, cet aspect concentrationnaire du chantier demeurait m\u00e9connu. Seule comptait la gloire du r\u00e9gime sovi\u00e9tique. Le canal symbolisait la lutte h\u00e9ro\u00efque de l\u2019homme contre la nature. Maxime Gorki, qui en fut l\u2019ardent d\u00e9fenseur,\u00a0parlait de \u00ab la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 du communisme\u00a0\u00bb traduite en acte dans un geste grandiose. Le Belomorkanal devait incarner la puissance de l\u2019URSS, comme les Pyramides \u00e9gyptiennes avaient magnifi\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e8re des Pharaons.<\/p>\n<p>Ce travail collectif, utile \u00e9conomiquement au pays, avait aussi une fonction sociale\u00a0: il permettait de transformer tous ceux qui s\u2019\u00e9taient fourvoy\u00e9s ou n\u2019avaient pas encore d\u00e9couvert les bienfaits de la r\u00e9volution d\u00e9sormais incarn\u00e9e par Staline. En travaillant durement, toujours au risque de leur vie, les \u201casociaux\u201d retrouvaient le go\u00fbt de leur patrie et le sens de l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat commun. Bien avant l\u2019invention du h\u00e9ros stakhanoviste, le travailleur du Belomorkanal figurait une nouvelle esp\u00e8ce d\u2019homme transcend\u00e9 par les vertus du socialisme. C\u2019est pourquoi la construction du canal devint rapidement l\u2019objet d\u2019un v\u00e9ritable culte et qu\u2019on en repr\u00e9senta la gen\u00e8se sous toutes ses formes\u00a0: litt\u00e9rature, films et photos.<\/p>\n<p>De nombreux albums virent ainsi le jour, en Car\u00e9lie et \u00e0 Moscou, compos\u00e9s avec art et d\u00e9votion, alliant des pan\u00e9gyriques \u00e0 la gloire du chantier et des photographies de travailleurs \u201casociaux\u201d pr\u00e9sentant les signes ext\u00e9rieurs d\u2019une reconversion r\u00e9ussie. Ceux-l\u00e0, qu\u2019ils aient \u00e9t\u00e9 criminels ou saboteurs, voleurs ou prostitu\u00e9es, sp\u00e9culateurs ou affameurs, incarnaient tous l\u2019Homme nouveau dont ces ann\u00e9es 1930 proclamaient l\u2019av\u00e8nement. Gr\u00e2ce au travail dans le paradis socialiste, ils conqu\u00e9raient leur r\u00e9demption.<\/p>\n<p>Le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre des albums fut\u00a0\u201cLe Canal Staline Mer Blanche-Baltique, histoire de la construction\u201d dit Album Gorki, magnifique recueil illustr\u00e9 r\u00e9unissant dans une louange commune les grands noms sovi\u00e9tiques de la litt\u00e9rature (Maxime Gorki, Alexe\u00ef Tolsto\u00ef, Viktor Chklovski) et de la photographie (Alexandre Rodtchenko).<br \/>\nLa r\u00e9putation de cet album s\u2019\u00e9tendit \u00e0 toute l\u2019URSS et gagna m\u00eame l\u2019Europe, o\u00f9 les chantres de la r\u00e9volution sovi\u00e9tique vant\u00e8rent bient\u00f4t le Belomorkanal. Commentant la \u00ab\u00a0requalification\u00a0\u00bb des travailleurs forc\u00e9s, Aragon \u00e9crivit, plein d\u2019enthousiasme\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Nous sommes \u00e0 un moment de l\u2019histoire de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 qui ressemble en quelque chose \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode du passage du singe \u00e0 l\u2019homme\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>A c\u00f4t\u00e9 de cet album Gorki, de nombreux autres documents furent produits \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque pour glorifier le Belomorkal.<\/p>\n<p>Des milliers de photographes furent prises par des artistes professionnels. Certains \u00e9taient c\u00e9l\u00e8bres, comme Rodtchenko, qui pass\u00e8rent quelques temps sur le canal pour faire des s\u00e9ries de clich\u00e9s. Mais d\u2019autres \u00e9taient des anonymes, arr\u00eat\u00e9s pour faire des photos quotidiennes et trait\u00e9s comme de simples d\u00e9tenus. Ceux-l\u00e0 rest\u00e8rent deux ans sur place \u00e0 documenter l\u2019avancement du chantier. A Petrazovodsk, petite ville en bordure du Belomorkanal, on peut consulter sous le manteau une collection de 10.000 photos d\u2019\u00e9poque de tr\u00e8s bonne qualit\u00e9, relatant jour apr\u00e8s le chantier du canal.<\/p>\n<p>Des images film\u00e9es furent \u00e9galement tourn\u00e9es sous l\u2019autorit\u00e9 de la police politique du Guepeou, responsable de l\u2019administration du chantier. Ces images pr\u00e9sentaient toutes les \u00e9tapes de percement du canal, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mise en service. Ces images furent rassembl\u00e9es sous forme de films de propagande, agr\u00e9ment\u00e9s de musiques entra\u00eenantes et de cartons aux textes \u00e9difiants.<br \/>\nPlusieurs versions de ces films furent sous-titr\u00e9s en langue \u00e9trang\u00e8re \u00e0 destination des partis communistes fr\u00e8res, notamment d\u2019Europe occidentale.<\/p>\n<p>Les films et les photos, pas plus que l\u2019album Gorki, ne mentionnaient, bien s\u00fbr, le co\u00fbt humain du chantier du Belomorkanal. Ils ne disait pas que les \u201casociaux\u201d \u00e9taient le plus souvent des opposants au r\u00e9gime, et non des d\u00e9linquants de droit commun. Ils ne montraient en des terribles conditions de vie des rel\u00e9gu\u00e9s, contraints \u00e0 un travail \u00e9puisant sans \u00e9quipement appropri\u00e9, oblig\u00e9s souvent de creuser la terre \u00e0 main nue, de manger et dormir en plein air, de soumettre leur existence d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9caire \u00e0 la lutte f\u00e9roce des camps de concentration.<\/p>\n<p>Les documents de propagande n\u2019expliquaient pas non plus que, pour mener \u00e0 bien ce projet pharaonique, la police politique n\u2019h\u00e9sitait pas \u00e0 faire main basse sur tous ceux dont elle avait besoin\u00a0: d\u00e9tenus ordinaires, d\u00e9linquants et droits communs, tir\u00e9s de leurs ge\u00f4les \u00e0 Moscou et exp\u00e9di\u00e9s en Car\u00e9lie pour r\u00e9aliser le gros \u0153uvre du chantier\u00a0; mais \u00e9galement ing\u00e9nieurs qualifi\u00e9s\u00a0&#8211; techniciens, architectes, sp\u00e9cialistes d\u2019hydraulique -, arr\u00eat\u00e9s sous des pr\u00e9textes fallacieux \u00e0 seule fin d\u2019utiliser une parcelle de leur savoir.<br \/>\nAinsi, l\u2019administration du canal n\u2019employait pas seulement les prisonniers existants, elle en suscitait, elle les cr\u00e9ait en fonction de ses besoins.
